Bennett facing an ugly fight
The respected news source Politico says Sen. Bob Bennett is likely to face a stiff challenge for his seat next year — even though he is scandal free and no Democrat can touch him in GOP-solid Utah.
Call it the "Cannon Conundrum," after former Congressman Chris Cannon, a conservative who never could seem to swing far enough to the right to please the GOP core in blood-red Utah. Cannon finally fell to Jason Chaffetz in a primary.

Many expect Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff to make an announcement to take on Bennett this week.
While Bennett has won reelection by landslide margins since first winning the seat in 1992, he’s also managed to alienate some conservatives back home on a handful of high-profile issues. In 2005, he opposed a constitutional amendment banning flag burning — an effort spearheaded by his home-state GOP colleague Sen. Orrin G. Hatch. A year later, he was a vocal supporter of then-President George W. Bush’s push for comprehensive immigration reform.
But it was Bennett’s Wall Street bailout vote last fall that served as the final straw for conservatives who argue that he’s become another big-spending Washington insider.

As much as I dislike Bennett, dumping him for Shurtleff seems like a negative. Reminds me of changing one pair of dirty underwear for another pair of dirty underwear.
I think either Michael S. Lee or Mark Shurtleff could beat Senator Bennett for 2010. Both would do a better job.
I don't think David Leavitt or James Russell Williams can beat Bennett.
I would vote for Bennett if we don't have anyone better.
Arc:
For christ's sake, anyone - nay, anything - would be better than Bennett. What a do-nothing idiot.
Father, like son. Sucking on the public tit for years, but doing absolutely nothing.
At least Hatch can claim, and often does, Kennedy as his best pal.
Does Bennett have a best pal?
By the way, the headline, "Bennett facing an ugly fight" is super. He must be looking in the mirror.
