End of an era
It seems likely that we are reaching the end of another Utah cultural epoch: Private club drinking.

The sponsors of competing bills to "modernize" Utah's liquor laws reportedly are on the verge of an agreement that would eliminate Utah's requirement that an adult buy a "club membership" to enjoy a cocktail.

Though I agree that Utah's liquor laws are generally a pain in the butt, I have to admit the goofy club membership requirement had its points:
I met some interesting, if perplexed, out-of-town visitors whom I "adopted" so they could get a hassle-free drink.
Explaining our state's screwy laws made Utahns the center of attention at gatherings out-of-state with friends and family. "It's not really a club. . . ." (Oh well, Utah still has a few other idiosyncrasies for conversation fodder.)
The law made us feel special and sophisticated because we belonged to exclusive social organizations, such as Jr.s, Club Faces, Jimax Club and the now-mythical D.B. Cooper's.
That "speakeasy" camaraderie of telling the bouncer, "I know a member" and waving at some smiling face in the club.

Jesus! They've finally legalized adulthood in Utah!
Now, let's change the state motto:
Utah: porn, elevated.
