The games politicians play
Gov. Jon Huntsman has vetoed a goofy bill that was supposed to regulate violent video games through the Truth in Advertising law. It makes your head hurt to follow how this scheme — pushed by Eagle Forum President Gayle Ruzicka, Sen. Chris Buttars and a kooky disbarred Florida lawyer named Jack Thompson — would have accomplished anything.

Had the law passed, a retailer that promised in its advertising to check the IDs of kids buying adult games, then allowed a kid buy one — the retailer would be subject to a civil lawsuit. Of course, a truly evil and wily retailer could circumvent the law by never offering to keep horrific games out of the hands of children.

Right now, you're asking, "Why would the Lege pass such a useless law?"

Heck if I know. I asked the sponsor, Rep. Mike Morley, who was a tool in this, and couldn't get a solid answer. My best guess? Morley and Buttars hoped to get points with their far-right backers by passing something, anything, linked to video game regulation.

Somehow, Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert (who wants to be Guv so bad it hurts to look at him) got sucked into this fiasco in an apparent effort to lock up the Eagle Forum vote.

Disbarred Thompson, a true zealot, issued a fatwa against Huntsman:
You got suckered [by the video game industry]. Further, there is no constitutional, First Amendment problem... If your veto is not overridden, then we will be back with a bill to ban the sale of these products altogether, in light of the recent massacres in Germany and in this country directly caused by these murder simulation products that are being copycatted by teens who are being fraudulently sold them.
I figure Ruzicka is sedately pushing pins into her Huntsman doll as you read this.

Oh Jack, you over-reactionary cad. Why don't you just threaten to sue Huntsman like you do everyone else you disagree with?

Update: Let me guess, Glen, Jack e-mailed you threatening a lawsuit for using his picture and made you change it to the voodoo doll.

It's gonna hurt you more Warchol when Herbert actually IS governor.

It's clear that he did not support the bill, otherwise the Governor never would have put the veto pen to it.

And way to site yourself as the source for the Lt. Gov's support of this bill. I guess with newspapers dying left and right, resorting to self-referencing for back up will become more common, that is, assuming you survive as well.

this blog is clear evidence why the SLTRIB is dying and the DNEWS is growing!

Hey Glen, when the trib files for bankruptcy this summer, will you move back home to Castro District!

Once again, Glen Warchol proves his ignorance/lack of legitimate sources with this baloney post.

Herbert had nothing to do with this legislation and I heard that from a top-staffer of his this morning.

His reckless use of a random comment made by a State Representative claiming that Herbert had a meeting with Thompson somehow turned into, by Warchol (in his own blog-post) some sort of 'endorsement' or 'support' coming from Herbert.

Good grief, Glen - is that all you have? Have you talked to Herbert? His staff? By what authority do you have it on that Gary Herbert had ANYTHING to do with this legislation?

I'm just wondering because I question if journalistic integrity means anything to you.

You seem to be a name-dropping, position-assigning jackass - but I could be wrong....

Morley has a more empty head than Buttars and that's saying something. Why everyone dances when Gayle says so eludes me. She's a brown shirt.

Glen - Good call, Jack's not the prettiest guy.

Harvey - The 50's called and they want their fear-steeped prejudice back.
