Going right till it hurts
Republican Sen. Bob Bennett, who faces an election challenge coming from his right, has woken up to discover he's a hawk. Bennett, who apparently isn't "in the loop" anymore, says he's heard around town that President Obama might cut back on defense spending.

Gracious, says fire-breathing Bennett, we can't let our troops down.

While we must make difficult cuts in some areas, I believe that slashing funding for our troops is not where we should be cutting corners.

His right-winged critics back in Utah will be comforted to hear Bennett joined a dozen Republicans who are concerned that while Obama intends to increase troops in Afghanistan, he will undermine the military's "ability to defend our country."

This still leaves an even-righter opening for Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, who lusts for Bennett's seat, to demand those Afghanistan reinforcements be used to seal the Mexican border, hunt down pornographers and root out politicians who would support civil unions for gay abortionists.

Interesting that Bennett believes this administration will lessen our security from terrorists from afar while in truth the terrorists has been right here in our midst in our Congressional Halls. Over the previous 8 years they have beefed up security in airports, for an example, to make sure we were safe from shampoo bottles and lighters carried on planes. While in the meantime they allowed deregulation and power brokers in gray suits (AIG) to completely undermine the financial security of every American. I'd rather take my chances with the threat of a radical terrorist, then the smiling face of a politician who says "just trust me". Bin Laden could not in his wildest imagination caused as much destruction as the congress and their loyalty to lobbyist and big corporations in exchange for campaign funds and perks.

I know I feel safer knowing that nobody has a full-sized shampoo bottle on the plane.

Seriously, I think that nobody should look at Bennett's voting record from 2008 - 2010 when deciding whether to support him for (yet) another term. Even staunch Republicans should wake up and realize that now it the perfect time to replace an aging senator (or two). And no matter how hard he campaigns I will remain convinced that Bennett is not getting younger.

The only way Bennett is leaving the Senate is by resignation or death. Bennett will be re-elected because Zion Square wants it. Bennett will wipe the floor with any GOP opponent and I would be really surprised to see a serious challenger waste all that time and capital trying to defeat a member of the Mormon aristocracy. Remember that Bennett is the son of a Prophet, that he is very tight with the Romneys, the Marriotts and the Huntsmans. Remember also that LDS voters are very easily persuaded to follow orders.

It is amazing how little press Michael S. Lee is getting. While he is in the same boat, not formally announced, he has just as good a chance of beating Bennett in 2010 as Mark Shurtleff does.

I honestly think that Bennett will not be re-elected, if either Mike or Mark do run. Bennett is campaigning right now harder than I have ever seen someone in office, this far out.

It is almost os if he is trying to intimidate the other 4 GOP candidates before they file for the race.

It would be nice to see the results of Mark's polls of current state delegates.
