Shurtleff: What happens online, . . .
Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, Utah's busy bee of campaign-fund raising, is working with the casino industry to legalize online gambling. Shurtleff, a political gambler, apparently wants to improve his odds in running against Sen. Bob Bennett by tapping donations from gamblers.

The AG says he's A-OK with online wagering, as long as it doesn't open the door to tribal casinos in Utah.

It is going to happen anyway, let's put some regulation in place. Even though we outlawed it for two years now, it is still going on and it is highly unregulated, so you've got unscrupulous people rigging the system. People are getting ripped off,

Shurtleff joins forces with Rep. Barney Frank, of all people, in pushing the legislation that would provide guards against underage gambling, compulsive gambling, money laundering and cheating. In short, the new regs would offer all the protections found in Nevada, where money laundering, getting ripped off and other forms of human-weakness exploitation are, of course, unheard of.

A major sticking point is that a state that allows one form of gambling cannot prevent tribes from starting their own casinos. With any luck, Utah seniors will be catching the bus to the new Goshute Oasis! in Iosepa.
