Where's the big love?

Reportedly, LDS members across the country are cancelling their AOL subscriptions because its Time Warner sibling HBO is going to air a Big Love segment that includes re-enactments of secret Mormon temple rituals.

According to the official LDS website:
Internet references to Big Love indicate that more and more Mormon themes are now being woven into the show and that the characters are often unsympathetic figures who come across as narrow and self-righteous. And according to TV Guide, it now seems the show’s writers are to depict what they understand to be sacred temple ceremonies.
The official site says the church itself would not call for a boycott. "Such a step would simply generate the kind of controversy that the media loves and in the end would increase audiences for the series," but:
Last week some Church members began e-mail chains calling for cancellations of subscriptions to AOL, which, like HBO, is owned by Time Warner. Certainly such a boycott by hundreds of thousands of computer-savvy Latter-day Saints could have an economic impact on the company. Individual Latter-day Saints have the right to take such actions if they choose.
I can't help but wonder how committed the protesters really are. Why go after AOL, when mass cancellations of cable subscriptions would really get HBO's atttention?

Yes, if Big Love gets the temple ceremony wrong, somebody from North Temple should step up and clarify exactly what goes on in those sparkly buildings.

Mormons are allowed to subscribe to HBO?

Either way, this has been the worst season of Big Love yet. So much so that I may not be back for a fourth season.

This is simply disrespectful and uncalled for.

I have watched 2 seasons of Big Love, and while I thought there were plenty of misrepresentations of Mormon practices, they were relatively benign.

This crosses the line. This whole season has been taking pot shots at the church, and this is just to add insult to injury.

So you know what? May as well just let it go. I don't care if ANYONE knows what happens inside of temples. I simply have been asked to keep it close to my heart, and not publicly discuss it. I made a covenant not to reveal it, and I'll stand by that. As Hugh Nibley noted, the covenant in the temple does not bind me from keeping others from breaking their own promises to keep it sacred.

So go ahead. Publicly imitate and profane the ceremonies performed within the House of the Lord. After all, you can have anything in this world for money. Judas had his 30 pieces of silver, and some poor unfortunate soul has their consulting contract. They have their reward.

Very Very Well said Anon 4:50.

People are still paying for AOL? They really should cancel that even before this episode.

And Yes, an HBO cancelation would make much more sense. I would cancel my HBO but I'm too cheap.

Who cares about anyone seeing what mormons do in their temple sweat lodges? We already know about the throat-cutting gesture, to warm those being baptized what will happen if/when they leave the phony church.

The temple rites are silly stuff and certainly have nothing to do with Christianity. For the most part they're based on JS's belief in magic, and many were swiped from the Masons.

Nothing secret about Catholic goings-on, or Lutheran, or Presbyterian, etc.

God does not like secret crap. And Christ, while on earth, was so simple in his message. Nothing secret. Just love and kindness.

Imagine Jesus using the throat-cutting symbol!!

It's stupid not sacred.

Forget what goes on behind the Temple doors. I'd rather watch what some of my attractive Mormon wives are doing behind their closed doors. With all the porn these Mormons/Utahns are watching, and all the kids they have, you gotta know there is some crazy, nasty stuff going on behind their doors. Yea baby, let me put some hot, secret Temple moves on. Come on honey, just like the Bishop taught you....

Tom Hanks and his gay producer friends can do what they like, who really cares. Everyone knows he dislikes unpatriotic mormons.

Sorry HBO. Your out of here. By the way, Tom Hanks who openly hates Mormons is the producer of Big Love. Go figure. It was bound to happen with the likes of his mentality in charge. I have never watched the show. The one time I tried it was so boring and soap opera like I turned the channel and re-runs of Friends. Much better viewing.

Tobiaz, grow up. There is NO throat cutting ceremonies or any other voodoo/magic crap that goes on, and if you believe there is, you truly are ignorant. I personally don't care if people know what goes on in the temple, what I do care about is the gross misrepresentation. I'm so sick of bigotry on ALL levels, I could scream. I don't have cable or AOL, so I'll be good. Everyone else, enjoy your popcorn and disrespectful, fictional movie.

For the most part "Big Love" pissing off Mormons is like Sony pissing off the Amish. All the outrage in the world on behalf of people who don't watch the show makes little to no difference to it, its writers/producers, and the network that airs it.

All your outrage, however, creates interest on the part of others who think you're weird to begin with. So I'm guessing HBO and the writers of "Big Love" thank you for your support.

Wow. I want to sign up for HBO just so I can support them in exposing the fraud of the Mormon Church.

What? LDS officials worried that the show "Big Love" portrays Mormons as being self-righteous? That's no portrayal - Mormons are self-righteous.

"Tobiaz, grow up. There is NO throat cutting ceremonies or any other voodoo/magic crap that goes on, and if you believe there is, you truly are ignorant."
Must be Buttars writing this; the author clearly can not conjugate! But I digress. There was a throat-cutting ceremony up until the late 1980's or early 90's: patrons of the temple would suffer their life to be taken by having their throats slit rather than reveal what goes on in the temple. Mostly ceremonial then, but implied nonetheless. Clearly, anon, you don't know Mo. hist.

What happened? Everybody go to bed? The mormons continue to deny association with the FLDS. They both believe in the Book of Mormon, worship the same prophets, practice secret temple ceremonies, and on and on. The FLDS temple in Texas is off limits to the general public, and only the worthy are allowed in, sound familiar? I think what bugs the mormons about this upcoming episode of Big Love the most, is the revelation that they are, in fact, the same. The LDS denial of association with the FLDS is a farce!

This has ben the best season yet. I've never been addicted to a show in my life before Big Love. I don't see what the big deal is- they're showing a ritual on screen. We always see religious rituals on tv, it happens all the time, and they don't freak out about it. The only difference is that your ritual is a secret one that no one is supposed to know about. Well, that's your problem. Quite frankly, secret rituals are weird, and I have no idea how secret rituals have anything to do with living with God. But whatever, get over it, you choose what to be offended by.

At March 10, 2009 6:29 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sacred not secret. Anyone can see the rituals in the temples if they prepare themselves for such an event. The Lord intended for the rituals to be given to all people but required they go through the correct process to gain the knowledge of them.
If you haven't your understanding of them could be misinterupted. Are you prepared to live the laws God set up for people to know these rituals. If not knowing them could bring about serious spiritual road blocks.
Many of the rituals are already on the internet becuase of hateful people. Again the knowledge of them is already out there. What are you going to do with the knowledge? Mock it or embrace it.
Do you want to know for the glory of God or for some other purpose?

Do you honestly think "Big Love" is a portial of the truth. Come folks, It's television. Even CSI isn't the truth. If you are looking for "Big Love" to reveal something embarassing about the LDS faith. Go find a better hobby. If anything, I'm embarassed for the actors willing to make this movie. It's a stain on their careers.
If you want the truth and want to see it all. Join the LDS faith. Find out for yourself. Don't rely on Hollywood to bring you the truth. They can't even get things right in their own lives.

This Big Love episode is a fulfillment of prophecy, and actually proves the divinity of the Book of Mormon. 2 Nephi 30:17 says that in the last days "There is nothing that is secret save it shall be revealed"! (See also Luke 12:2).

This means that the Savior is getting ready to return!

I love the show. I'm curious as hell to see how the writers weave the temple endowment ceremony into the last two episodes for the season. Look. The LDS Church leaders (mostly Under Gordon B. Hinckley's charge) have worked for decades to put the church out on the world stage. Pres. Hinckley went on national TV numerous times to publicize the religion. Last year, the church was up to its eyebrows in fighting Prop 8. The hierarchy has opened itself up to press and cultural scrutiny. If you want to play in the world's sandbox, you oughta get used to getting a bit of sand thrown in your eyes now and again.

Sorry. Of course I meant the LDS Church fought "for" prop 8. Thanks.

It isn't the sacredness that bothers the Mormons. It's the embarrassment of being confronted with the silliness of secret handshakes, holy garments, little hammer taps, etc.
