Be careful with whom you mess
It's time to start a new Crawler feature, let's call it: Justice—Utah style.

Consider the following cases:
Crime: Nicholas T. Murdock, 28, allegedly liked stomping on the gas in his Beemer while taking a corner on Wasatch Boulevard in Holladay. He hit and badly injured a bicyclist. Police say Murdock stopped only long enough to cover his license plate before fleeing the scene of the accident.

Punishment: Murdock is charged with three misdemeanors — including obstructing justice.

Crime: A teenager is accused of tagging three police cars with graffiti — at a West Valley police station. Using investigative skills developed by CSI, a cop arriving at the station notes that a kid is spray painting a police car. The damage is estimated at $900.

Punishment: The cheeky teen is socked with a felony.

Finally, is it just me, or does Murdock, above right, bear a resemblence to Billy "The Kid" Bonney?

WTH? Is our AG related to this Kid?
DUI, Attempted Homicide, Fleeing the scene. Take your pick, but there better be a felony in there somewhere. Plus loss of license for a year, pay all medical costs and all lost wages and $250k for pain and suffering.

I thought allowing that High schooler to play ball after felony counterfitting was BS, but this is not tolerable. How do we put pressure on a DA to wake up and smell the impaired driving?

The kid with the spray paint? Give him 100 hours washing cop cars and a misdemeanor.

Maybe we can carry the 'likeness-to-Billy-The-Kid' factor a step further....maybe he'll meet his demise in a similar fashion!
Jus' sayin'!

Fun fact: On suspect Murdock's Myspace page, his nickname is "Murder."

Anyway, there was this bicycle hit and run, and another one yesterday. About three years back, a driver hit and killed a Sudanese refugee riding home from his job at Black Diamond Equipment in Holladay. As I recall, once he turned himself in days later (gave the guy time to sober up), D.A. could only charge him with a misdemeanor.

I'm with you Glen. Something's gotta give. Could be the Utah Bicycle Coalition's next legislative project.

So it's no surprise to some of us that from the first contact with police through the entire judicial and corrections system in Utah that race and income play a huge part in how justice is meted out.

And not just that the charges in this case are too light but in many cases the charges and penalties are way to severe.

I was really good friends with nick in junior high. He has always been a jerk and very selfish. His response to me about this case was, "it's not like I meant to hit him." Ugh! This happened after I had told him how my brother was paralyzed recently. Now the man he hit could be in the same situation. He has no remorse. And what? NO felony?
