Looking like a jackass
A Politico report on a GOP dirty-tricks squad makes Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz look like a complete tool of Minority Whip Eric Cantor.

Cantor's newest partisan strategy is to put together embarrassing YouTube clips of vulnerable Democratic freshmen to undercut their re-election chances. Cantor’s aides send e-mails to Chaffetz and other members of this elite "attack team" when targeted Democrats are speaking on the floor. Cantor's minions even include scripts to focus the questioning.

But YouTube videos of rookies trying to debate can cut both ways, says Politico.
Of course, these attacks don’t always work out. Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly, a veteran of party politics, quickly turned a Chaffetz challenge against his attacker. The Utah freshman also appeared flustered when Kilroy left the floor recently as he launched another line of questioning about her AIG vote.
MSNBC has followed up with embarassing side-by-side videos proving that Chaffetz and other GOP House attack members are reading from a script. (Chaffetz appears about two minutes into the report.)

Thanks Glen, I am more appalled at my $70,000 tax bill that they are debating that Olberman obviously mentions nothing about! As a member of the press why would anyone quote anything from MSNBC! Haven't they been exposed as anything less than 3rd rate?

isnt reading from a script the same as reading from a teleprompter?

Yes, Glen, Dems do much better at reading their scripts from Move-On.org.

Glen, this is classic politics. The fact that you think reading from talking points is a new thing is rather pathetic.

All the anony-mii totally miss the point of Glen's post: it's to show that Chaffetz, for all his tough-guy "round 'em up" street cred in Utah valley, is really just another right-wing tool. Instead of actually, you know, trying to find solutions to the country's problems, the tThe rethugs are flailing around frantically, trying to find anything that can hurt the Dems and Obama. They just can't get over the fact that the whole country has rejected their failed "feed-the-rich" policies.

rdale is absolutely right. I can't stand Chaffetz for multiple reasons (1st, that he doesn't live in the district he "represents") but I can respect a politician who's his own man as opposed to a bought man. Such as when he refuses pork projects on principle. However, reading some Republican tool's talking points loses you all credibility and identifies you as a very bought man.

Teleprompter or written notes?...well, at least there is a good chance Chaffetz wrote his own thoughts. And of course we should never question the "other side"..hhmmm....heaven forbid

MSNBC??? is that still around????

I'm watching Olberman right now, now.

I didn't realize how cute Chaffetz is, is he still sleeping on the cot?

He would make a splendid Hatchling, it will probably be soon too, Hatchling's singing is really taking off, heard his new one the other day.

Was just catching up on my reading at Mormongate, fascinating stuff, I would like to see the screenplay.

Keep Tahoe Blue.

Teleprompter schmeleprompter. Tent Boy embarasses Utah again. And Obama does way more interviews about everything from the credit crisis to Afghanistan without a teleprompter, cards, or the help of aids--and knows what the hell he's talking about--very much unlike the not so "mis-underestimated" Bush.

Its’ unfortunate so many third rate politicians allow themselves to be bullied by the Senatorial and Congressional Campaign Committees to stump speech their talking points. Can't we have congressman and senators that are more upstanding than Chaffetz that will speak his true mind, research his own facts and honestly represent the will of the constituents? Oh Yeah Chaffetz is not even a resident of his own district.

I'm sure Jason LOVED more media attention, but the video on Olbermann was just downright embarrassing for his district and the people of Utah.

For all of his campaign promises to clean up Washington, Chaffetz has turned out to be a spoiled brat playing childish pranks while the nation is in two wars, facing all sorts of international issues, and an economic crisis that could cripple the country for generations...

Grow up Jason and start contributing to real governance. Frat boy behavior became passe after Bush left the White House and the adults took over.
