Matheson crosses Obama on climate
Wall Street Journal columnist Kimberley Strassel muses that Utah Democratic Congressman Jim Matheson could be the man who kills Barack Obama's global warming legislation.

Matheson, chair of the Blue Dog energy task force, laid out more than a dozen problems he has with Rep. Henry Waxman's climate bill, Strassel says:
Matheson is one of about 10 moderate committee Democrats who are less than thrilled with the Waxman climate extravaganza, and who may yet stymie one of Barack Obama's signature issues.
[Matheson] has made a political career championing energy diversity and his state's fossil fuels, and who understands Utah is mostly reliant on coal for its electricity needs. He says he sees several ways this bill could result in a huge "income transfer" from his state to those less fossil-fuel dependent.

The real risk to the president is that his bill goes down at the hands of his own party -- with nary a Republican to blame.

Utah could be an alternative energy leader, given that we have a lot of wind and a hell of a lot of sun. Too bad people like Mattheson don't get it. What a throw back.

When are Utah Democrats going to say enough is enough and get rid of this loser? Ever since he was elected all he's done is cover his own butt and ensure his own re-election. If that means planting his lips on Karl Rove's pasty white tushy then that's OK! Now he stabs Obama in the back because he's afraid of...what? Gayle Ruzicka will say bad things about him. Draft Jenny Wilson! Let's get rid of this jerk and get a real Democrat.

Here's the email I just sent his office:

Once again Rep. Matheson proves just who he represents: first, himself; second, lobbyists; third, special interests from the big energy companies. The people of his district or the whole state of Utah? Who cares? They don't make campaign contributions that pay for his re-election. I was disgusted to read in the Wall Street Journal that you are stabbing President Obama in the back over his energy plans. Utah could be an energy leader in solar and wind power but no, you have to bow down to your paymasters in big oil and throw the rest of us under the bus. I hope, pray, and call for a primary challenge from a real Democrat, not someone who has a constituency of exactly one: himself.

Matheson's the only democrat I've ever had any respect for. He actually uses common sense and logic in his voting. It's too bad the rest of the dems are vapid ideologues with no sense of morality.
