Tracking the Mormon link
Gay-rights bloggers around the nation are trying to trace the connection between the Mormon church and the National Organization for Marriage, producer of the much-mocked "Gathering Storm" anti-gay marriage video. Some groups, such as Californians Against Hate, believe NOM—which circulated an online petition thanking the LDS church for supporting Proposition 8—is basically a front for the church.

Now, a major connection between the Mormon church and NOM has been severed. Matthew Scott Holland, right, son of Mormon apostle Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, stepped down from NOM's board. Matthew Holland is now president of Utah Valley University in Orem. Talking Points Memo reports:
NOM's petition was widely touted by a Mormon media that invariably failed to mention [Matthew] Holland's involvement* in the organization.
TPM surmises, apparently with tongue in cheek, that the younger Holland may have left because he lost a YouTube ratings war with his father:

Jeffrey Holland's talk "An Apostle's Easter Thoughts on Christ" got 441,530 views, 4.5 stars and 434 fawning comments

NOM's "Gathering Storm" got 478,140 views, 1 star and 8,700 mocking comments.

*Yes, TPM seems to see The Salt Lake Tribune as "Mormon media."

When is someone going to do an expose of the LDS Church anti-gay front group "Evergreen"? You know the guys who hold anti-gay conferences at the Joseph Smith Building every year, who support aversion therapy, are subsidized with Church resources, media, and staff support (but they deny any involvement with Evergreen so they can't be sued or tracked). Why aren't they investigated?

Evergreen goes beyond cheesy fear mongering ads and political campaigning like NOM, and actually does the Church's dirty work of forcibly "curing" the LDS gays they can't pressure into committing suicide while they're young.

Political groups are subject to some disclosure laws, but Evergreen manages to hide under rocks while doing real damage to people.

Sooner or later, their abuses will be the real story of the LDS anti-gay crusade.

Hey Mr. Anonymous, have you ever been to an Evergreen conference? Probably not with the vial you just spewed about it. Just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean you have to criticize it. It might not be your choice but it is the choice of others. Oh, that's right, it can't possible be good because it goes against your narrow attitude. Get a life and let others make their own choices.

Yes, anything but accepting the truth about the campaign -- that opponents to gay marriage spanned the width and breadth of California faith and ethnicity. Blacks, Hindus, Muslims, Latinos, Catholics, evangelical Christians and Mormons all joined in the successful effort.

The "therapy" Evergreen practices goes against the code of ethics of Social Work and Psychology. Dangerous stuff!

Hey, thanks for the link to my TPM post. Soon after posting that, I ran across this item:

"Utah Valley University President Matthew Holland recently stepped down from the organization's board and was replaced by author and Mormon Times columnist Orson Scott Card."

The same Orson Scott Card who wrote this:

"How long before married people answer the dictators thus: Regardless of law, marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down, so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support marriage, and help me raise my children in a society where they will expect to marry in their turn."

NOM may or may not "rock" but they're certainly on a "roll" ;-)
