Who needs seagulls when you've got Led Zeppelin?
Resident of Tuscarora, Nev., have turned up boom boxes blaring rock music to drive off the hordes of Mormon crickets that annually descend on the town. After a resident found a 1934 newspaper article describing pioneers' use of a gong to keep crickets away, desperate citizens cranked up the rock, notably Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones, during the peak cricket season. The crickets advanced no further, apparently finding "Stairway to Heaven" repellent.
Nevada state entomologist Jeff Knight has yet to endorse the auditory insecticide:
The vibrations may deter the bugs, but I don't know of any research that says yes or no.
