The struggle goes on

Though gay marriage was dumped in Maine, gay rights activists scored a small victory in Salt Lake City. Using a Mormon handcart as a prop, the Foundation for Reconciliation delivered a petition to LDS Church headquarters. The spectrum of news media from the Associated Press to the Deseret News covered the journey from This Is The Place Monument to a rally at City Creek Park — though only about 40 civilians showed up.
Unfortunately, the exact purpose of the inspired bit of political theater was unclear: Were the activists, who delivered a symbolic casserole dish and a teddy bear along with the petitions, calling on the church for to accept gays, to acknowledge that it has a lot of closeted gay members, stop teaching that gays can "repent" or to just stop preaching hell and damnation for being gay?
Former Mormon and gay activist Jacob Whipple made what would be a surprising comment to staunch Mormons:
"They [LDS Church] are forcing their lifestyle on us!"
Anyone outside the Mormon culture, of course, just wonders why gays don't simply find — or start — a more accepting religion — because one thing Whipple said was spot on:
We are here today because the Church just doesn't get it. And I believe they never will."
