A bill to block the importation of foreign N-waste into the United States (possibly even Utah) is headed for a congressional hearing. The Radioactive Import Deterrence Act is co-sponsored by Reps. Jason Chaffetz and Jim Matheson, who says:"No other country on earth takes another country's nuclear waste."
Actually, EnergySolutions hazardous waste dump in Tooele County has been taking low-level foreign radioactive waste for some time, but the measure could block another 1,600 tons of Italian waste from coming into the Clive site.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of Utah's congressional delegation lines up on this bill — particularly Rep. Bob Bishop who is a wholly owned subsidiary of EnergySolutions.
