Remembering Utah's jewel

August 10th, 2009

Remember when Utah County idol Jason Caffetz was hungering for office and vowed to set up "tent cities" to put illegal aliens behind barbed wire? Ha.Ha. Thank Zeus he hasn't kept that promise — yet.

We can only hope that the Topaz museum planned for Delta is completed before he gets back on his horrific hobby horse to get re-elected. Topaz, of course, was an internment camp that held more than 10,000 Japanese-Americans during World War II.

Camellia Davis, whose father was imprisoned at Topaz, is still trying to understand the fear that drove Americans to that point:

"We need to be educated, all of us, to avoid having this mistake happen again. It would be an even greater tragedy if we learned nothing from this — that sometime in the next century we did it again because we were afraid."

Herbert's illegal bodyguards

August 10th, 2009

A-day-away-from-Gov. Gary Herbert has been violating state law by getting protection from the state Highway Patrol. The trouble-makers at the Associated Press discovered that the security team assigned to Herbert while he has been waiting to take over for U.S. Ambassador to China Huntsman was not legally authorized.

The Office of Executive Protection exists only to protect the Guv and his family. Legislative leaders forgot to activate the extended coverage to Herbert.

2/3 of Utahns not idiots

August 10th, 2009
Before you get depressed by the Deseret News headline alleging a third of Utahns question whether President Barack Obama is a citizen, take a closer look at the poll.

Dan Jones, working for the DNews and KSL, found that less than 10 percent of the respondents are "birthers," that is, part of the odd-ball fringe that believes Obama is NOT a natural-born citizen. (They were the ones wearing aluminum foil hats at the "Take Back Utah" rally Saturday.)

One out of four Utahns say they "don't know." In this case, ignorance is a good thing because this whole nutjob-driven "birther" controversy should have never gotten beyond the blog that proves a folded $20 bill predicted the Twin Towers attack.

Not being aware of birthers shows you have productive things to do with your Internet connection.

Meanwhile, a solid two-thirds of Utahns have no doubts that Obama was born in the U.S.A. (Hawaii is still a state) and is qualified to be president of the United States.

Blue smoke on the Hill

August 8th, 2009

Blogging from the Tire-Tracks-Over-the-Red Rock Rally —

Once again, somewhat liberal Salt Lake City (Hey, Obama barely carried the burg, right?) finds out that it is an island in a sea of arch-conservatism and why national stand-up comedians make fun of us.

Sweet Beejeebus, there must be a ba-zillion 3,000 4x4s and ORVs rolling up State Street, winding around the Capitol and clogging the parking lots. Does anybody care about the carbon footprint of this extravaganza?

Politicians will be speechifying, but, like they say, a photo's worth a thousand words, I'll give you 3K worth:

KSL gets national 'kudos'

August 7th, 2009
MSNBC's Keith Olbermann put KSL-TV into his "World's Best Persons" hall of shame for having a "total absence of a sense of humor."

If you remember, KSL and the Sutherland Institute were horrified over a satirical column by the Trib's Casey Jones that called for a "cap-and-trade tax on kids." (Gracious, what would they think if they read Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal"!)

Before KSL sends in for a suitable-for-framing certificate, I guess I'd better point out that Olbermann's "World's Best Persons" rating is NOT really an honor.

I've been a newspaperman for nearly three decades and have done hard time at United Press International; small dailies and nasty alternative newspapers, including the Observer in Dallas. In some bizarre convulsion of fate, I joined a few other twisted gentiles at the Deseret News for a few years. Along the way, I reproduced twice. I live in Salt Lake's historic refinery district with my current wife Mary Brown Malouf, another journalist. Now, I'm on a new adventure on the Internet-where the best things in life are (mostly) free.
