CBS Has Its Eye on Fall With New Shows
May 20th, 2009It's now CBS up to the plate in New York City with its upfront presentation. Here's a look at the new schedule.
First up "Medium" fans, the NBC crime show about a psychic who sees dead people, was picked up by CBS as quickly as NBC dropped it.
Look for it on Friday nights at 8 p.m.
Fans of "The Unit" and "Without a Trace," I'm sorry. The shows were cancelled.
What's new? First up is "Accidentally on Purpose," based on the true-life story of a California movie critic who has a baby with a one-night stand. (By the way, that movie critic, Mary F. Pols, is now out of work like just about every other movie critic in this country).
"NCIS" gets a spinoff, called "NCIS: Los Angeles." Does this mean it's the next franchise based on where it is set, like the "CSI" series? Even the titles are getting rehashed.
Meanwhile, there's also a drama named "The Good Wife" and another called "Three Rivers."

Everybody Wants to Cut Footloose
May 19th, 2009The "Footloose" remake rumor mill is grinding even louder.
Now, E! is reporting that Disney star Miley Cyrus is possibly in consideration to play the female lead in the remake of the hit 1980s movie musical, the love interest role originally played by Lori Singer.
But watch out, Utahn and "Dancing With the Stars" diva Julianne Hough also auditioned for the role, along with "Heroes'" Hayden Panetierre and actress Amanda Bynes. Tough competition out there.
Meanwhile, E! also is reporting
that Paramount has confirmed that "Gossip Girl" hunk Chace Crawford (pictured, right) is taking up the role of Ren McCormack (originally played by Kevin Bacon), a role that fellow "DWTS" alum Derek Hough - Julianne's brother - auditioned for (which would have made for a very creepy movie if both were considered for the movie). The movie almost was put in danger of being placed on hold when Zac Efron pulled out of consideration for the lead part. Now, the studio is bent on getting the movie made without him.
The movie is supposed to start filming March of next year with "High School Musical" director Kenny Ortega at the helm.
The biggest question for Utahns is whether the new movie will be shot here. Consider the rationale: the original was shot in Lehi at the roller mills, Ortega loves shooting in Utah as he has filmed all three "HSM" movies here, the state is now offering higher incentives for film productions to shoot here making it more economically viable to film in the Beehive State, and it seems like a small town in Utah would be the most realistic place to set a story about a town that makes dancing and music illegal.
I'll keep you posted on what could be the big musical movie of 2010.
What!?! You mean you don't remember "Footloose"?!?!
Here's a clip to remind you (and if you do remember, it's a sign of your age!)
"Chuck" Takes the Subway
May 19th, 2009Believe it or not, this is what saved the show "Chuck" from cancellation.

Seriously.
Read from NBC's announcement today (May 19) during its upfront presentation, and you'll see what I mean. Expect Chuck to be eating A LOT of Subway sandwiches next season, probably more than Jared ever ate.
NBC is pleased to announce that due to an innovative advertising partnership with Subway, the fan-favorite and critically-lauded series "Chuck" will return for the 2009-10 season. The announcement was made by Ben Silverman, Co-Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios, and Mike Pilot, President, Sales and Marketing, NBC Universal.
"This innovative partnership is a perfect example of the effectiveness of the NBC Infront," said Silverman. "By involving Subway early in the process, we were able to bring a quality show like 'Chuck' back to NBC for next season. Everybody wins - NBC, Subway, and the loyal fans who so enthusiastically lobbied for 'Chuck's' renewal."
"Medium" and "My Name is Earl" Canceled!

Meawhile, "30 Rock" will debut in mid-season at 8:30 p.m., and the new crime drama "Southland" returns on Fridays with the 20th season of "Law & Order."
Here's what they have announced that's new:

"Parenthood" - A comedy drama based on the Ron Howard movie about parenting.

"The Jay Leno Show" - Jay comes back, this time siphoning one hour of good primetime real estate each night of the week.
Meanwhile, as mentioned before, "Chuck" is coming back as is "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" "The Celebrity Apprentice" and "The Biggest Loser."
