"The Beautiful Life" Snuffed Out

September 28th, 2009

I guess it wasn't such a beautiful life for "The Beautiful Life" after all.

The flashy but empty-headed CW drama about life in fashion modeling, produced by former model Ashton Kutcher, is the first cancellation of the fall season.

After only two episodes, the show could only muster about a million viewers a week, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Production on the show immediately shut down, and Kutcher went back to twittering.

Next on the chopping block is the equally vacuous CW drama, "Melrose Place," if it doesn't beef up its ratings. Meanwhile, the network's other show, "The Vamprie Diaries," seems to be doing OK.

"SNL" Newcomer Has Big Oops

September 28th, 2009

Oh to be a new comic regular on "Saturday Night Live." Does any actor dream of anything bigger for their first gig?

Jenny Slate started her career on "SNL" and the show's season last Saturday (Sept. 26) by dropping a bomb - the F-bomb.

In this skit with regular Kristen Wiig, they play biker chicks when Slate lets it fly. I love her blowfish expression when she realizes her mistake. We here in the lovely Rocky Mountain state didn't get to see the boo-boo because we get a one-hour tape delay. The editors kindly removed that word for our broadcast. But the rest of the east and west coasts were tainted with that awful, awful word. They'll never be the same.

Here's the video of it. Do I have to warn you that it contains the one objectionable word in it?

Spielberg Goes to the Great White Way - Sorta

September 23rd, 2009

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg is teaming with Showtime to create a new television series about the creation of a Broadway play.

He's expected to hire musical veterans Craig Zafan and Neil Meron (of "Hairspray" and "Chicago" movie fame) to work with him.

According to Variety, the new show will "chronicle the development of an original Broadway musical, from its creative inception through its opening night." No idea on when it will reach television sets.

Spielberg already is working with Showtime as the executive producer of "The United States of Tara," which nabbed an Emmy for best actress in a comedy for Toni Collette.

We Need Another Medical Show - Stat!

September 23rd, 2009

J.J. Abrams, executive producer of "Fringe" and director of the summer blockbuster "Star Trek," is turning to comedy for his next project. The Hollywood flavor of the month will be executive producing a new half-hour sitcom for Fox, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The only description for it is "a comedic medical show."

Since medical series are all over the television dial right now, this is a welcome new addition (dripping with heavy sarcasm).

"Glee" Gets a Full Season

September 22nd, 2009

One of the best new shows of the fall season, Fox's funny and charming "Glee," is the first show of the new year to be picked up for a full season.

According to Broadcasting & Cable, the show about a high school glee club has been given its order of back nine episodes for a full 22-episode season.

Which is great news for fans of this delightfully different show that combines dancing, music, comedy and an off-kilter sensibility.

"It's already got the makings of a cultural phenomenon," Fox president Kevin Reilly said. "I've seen all 13 episodes, and Ryan Murphy, his team and the talented 'Glee' cast have knocked our socks off with their incredible work."

Emmy Viewing Up - But Not By Much

September 21st, 2009

The number of viewers who tuned into the 61st Annual Emmy Awards was up by one million, according to Nielsen figures.

That's up from the record low of 12.3 million from last year's Emmys. And it was the highest ratings for the ceremony since 2006. There was much rejoicing.

But before Hollywood pop's the champagne cork, the other news is that Sunday night football, in which the Dallas Cowboys showed off their new stadium, still beat the pants off of the Emmys in ratings.

So Neil Patrick Harris did a nice job hosting the ceremony and he brought in some viewers. But it's not the turnaround I would imagine the Emmys needs. Though it's a start.

Winning an Emmy Can Be a Real Headache

September 21st, 2009

At least it can be for actress Kristin Chenoweth, who won a best supporting actress in a comedy Emmy for the cancelled "Pushing Daisies."

Shortly after the win and doing press interviews backstage, the 41-year-old actress began feeling a migraine and had to be checked out by paramedics.

She's doing fine, said her publicist, and she didn't have to take a ride to the hospital.

Chenoweth had one of the best speeches of the night too. She went to the podium, and in a nod to her cancelled series, she said, "I'm not employed now, so I'd like to be on `Mad Men,'" she said. "I also like `The Office' and `24.' Thank you so much to the academy for recognizing a show that's no longer on the air."

Don't worry folks. I'm sure she has plenty to do in movies and TV.
