Mormons for McCain
Wannabe President John McCain may have a strategy to undermine Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's potential 2008 chances at the White House: Get Mormons, Romney's fellow faithful, to support McCain.
McCain has already tapped Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., a prominent Mormon, to join his Straight Talk America PAC. (Romney still counts still Huntsman's multimillionaire parents as backers.)
Now, as Roll Call reported this morning,) Oregon Sen. Gordon Smith, also a Mormon, has been participating in "Senate kitchen Cabinet" meetings with McCain in anticipation of a 2008 bid. Roll Call didn't mention Smith's faith, but it's worth pointing out that of all the senators out there for McCain to consult with, he picks one of four GOP Mormon senators.
