Honeymoon
On the opening day of the 2007 Legislature -- eight hours of campfire-singing and general good will -- Senate President John Valentine thanked the news media "for keeping our republic alive and healthy.

"We have been assigned a team of bright, capable reporters that will take the story of the Legislature to the people of the state. They have done a good job," he said, in a rare public back-patting.

But then the kicker: "I am asking the media to continue to be attentive, professional and accurate in your coverage of the Legislature this session. We will do what we can to help."

How about opening those daily closed Senate Republican caucuses? You know -- the ones where all the real debate and decision-making takes place.

Yeah, yeah, shine on you crazy diamond. I liked the part about the Iroquis Confederacy better.

Here is the complete text of the offending paragraph:

"This nation has remained free, not because we have overcome the age-old vices of human nature, but because of our background institutions, our quest for justice, and many other fortunate decisions and miracles. Not the least of which is the institution of a FREE PRESS.

"I am grateful to the news media for their role in keeping our republic alive and healthy. We have been assigned a team of bright capable reporters that will take the story of the legislature to the people of the state. They have done a good job so far. I am asking the media to continue be attentive, professional, and accurate in your coverage of the Legislature this session. We will do what we can to help."
