On banning the teen tan
During Thursday's committee debate on a proposal to place parental controls on teens who use tanning salons, sponsor Pat Jones likened commercial tanning to underage smoking.

Both are dangerous and addictive, she noted. As evidence, Jones cited a story in Parade Magazine about a Miss America contestant who became obsessed with fake baking.

Sen. Chris Buttars, a skin cancer survivor who would prefer an all-out ban on teen tanning, couldn't help himself.

"You make the comparison with cigarettes, but really what you're saying is, 'we're not going to ban the cigarettes but you can use five a week,'" Buttars said.

Added Sen. Scott McCoy: "With a note from your mom."

The meeting ended before there could be any discussion of whether Miss America contests are linked to brain cancer.

When teen tanning is outlawed, only outlaw teens will be tan.
