Hard living
Did the circus that is Utah's Legislature contribute to Rep. Paul Ray's heart woes? Did the rigors of representing Clearfield lead him to a grueling open heart surgery to repair a valve?

Nope, his doctors say, but the circus -- the actual circus -- probably played a part.

Ray grew up in Peru, Indiana, known as the circus capital of the great ol' USA.

And in between his second and third heart surgeries, Ray joined the city circus as a trapeze artist and a high wire daredevil -- pretty daring for a guy on blood thinners.

When he was 20, Ray had a mishap and fell off the trapeze. He dropped 30 feet and fell on the bleachers.

His surgeons believe he tore his carotid artery in the fall.

Ray not only received a new valve but he also had that tear sewed up.
