But it appears others in the school haven't got the message that the university isn't backing Romney, a Mormon and BYU alum, and that school resources are off limits for political purposes.
Ed Snow, director of development for BYU's Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship, sent an email to various people, including others at BYU, last week with an attached picture of 64-year-old potential candidate Fred Thompson and his wife who is 25 years his younger. The subject line was, "Fred Thompson’s trophy wife."
"From the attachment, you can see that Fred Thompson and his wife Jeri (25 years his junior) may not wear well on many conservatives," Snow said in the e-mail.
"When making their final decision before entering the voting booth, I think many conservatives will in their minds compare this attached picture with a mental picture of Mitt Romney with his lovely wife of 38 years, their five handsome sons, five beautiful [daughters]-in-law, and darling grandchildren. I hope so."
BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said the e-mail was an inappropriate use of the campus e-mail system and is not an endorsement of any candidate by the university.
A supervisor has spoken with Snow about school resources and, "it won't happen again," Jenkins said.
She adds that the university has and will continue to caution employees not to participate in e-mail chains that involve political motivation.

I remember several years ago when a similarly senseless comparison was made of Bill Orton and his family (he wasn't married at the time) with the large family of his Republican challenger (the name escapes me), as though this had any bearing at all on the election.
Rightly, the people were incensed, and Orton gained in the polls and won the election.
I'm not suggesting that Romney had anything to do with it, but this recent snipe at Fred Thompson makes no sense, and at best will redound to the detriment of Romney.
