The story GOP Ready to Tackle State Referendum Law says Republican leaders of the Legislature are getting ready to make it tougher for citizens to get referendums on the ballot after last year's voucher defeat.
Problem is the only two Republican leaders quoted in the story -- Senate President John Valentine and Senate Majority Leader Curt Bramble -- say it's the first they ever heard of such an effort.
"We know of no movement afoot to alter the current system. We're not inclined to change the law," they said on the Republican Senate blog. "We feel the current balance is about right -- referendums and initiatives are tough, but doable."
It's what Bramble and Valentine told me early this morning when I called to check out the front-page news in our competition.
So what's going on? Dunno, but the story remained up on the D-News website all day without any correction or clarification.

Dan, not every reporter is as thorough or principled as you and Matt Canham seem to be. That's not tongue in cheek, I am just saying what I've been saying for some time now: Bob Bernick may be the worst political reporter in Utah.
I swear, take away Bernick's calculator and his sarcastic tone, and he wouldn't know how to write a story.
The Trib didn't get scooped by the DNews -- unless you consider "made-up" news scoopable.
And don't hold your breath waiting for someone inside the Senate to confirm a secret, sinister plan to undo the referendum process.
That was never going to happen.
Bernick just invented a straw man, beat him up real good, and then went back to the philly-cheese sandwich he was sharing with Lee Davidson, poolside at the YMCA.
Question- What's Bernick and Davidson without an agenda, Wikipedia(i.e. the source of all knowledge), and reports published by the Lieutenant Governor's Office?
Answer- Clueless
