-- Hughes is irritated that State Democratic Vice Chairman Rob Miller chastised him in his blog for comments last week where he said he hates Utes and is irritated how Utah fans make fun of the Cougar's Mormonism. Miller was appalled. (I'm with Hughes on this one. Pick a team, Cougar or Ute, and be that.)
-- Hughes says Democrats only win by playing to people's pessimism ("No, we can't!"). The Draper Republican says, however, that he wants the Utah Legislature to follow Obama's lead when it comes to tax cuts. "I hope that when we enter the general session, tax cuts are not off the table," he said. (In good times you cut taxes; In bad times you cut taxes to get to good times; repeat. But do legislators really have the stomach to cut another $50 million from programs, stuff like this or this to pay for another tax cut? See, the feds don't have to pay for it; Utah does.)
-- Philpot and Hughes take issue with a Trib article on BLM bid-buster Tim DeChristopher. The article says that some have called him a hero. Hughes asks, if a conservative interfered with a legal process, would the media call him a hero? (We'd probably call him senator )
-- Red Meat All-Star Howard Stephenson calls in from the road. He's in Alabama for an education conference. (Because where would senators from the lowest-funded and poorly performing state go to learn about education? Why, another low-funded, mediocre state. And really, what says "education" like Alabama? The National Conference of State Legislators paid for the trip). Stephenson said he wore a University of Utah hat as he got off the plane and nearly was mugged. And they learned that America's space program is at risk because there are not enough scientists (which is why Utah State, which does a considerable amount of work for NASA, is going to be forced to cut an estimated 700 positions this year. That should help those eggheads learn subtraction).
-- Stephenson said he "couldn't help but laugh out loud" at DNews columnist Bob Bernick's piece this week, where he suggests ethics concerns played an integral part in the ouster of Senate President John Valentine. "It's just preposterous," said Stephenson. Valentine also objected to the characterization here. Hughes says newspapers are doomed. What is the future of journalism? Philpot's latest project: read it here (You'll all miss me when I'm gone).
-- Caller "Steve" gives big props to Red Meat Radio. He's glad they're on the air, then segues into a story about how the Illuminati stole millions or billions of dollars from the United States, just as his cell phone cuts out (because the Illuminati secretly control the cell phone companies). "I'm glad he brought up the Illuminati," says Philpot, because it fits in with his "Conspiracy Minute." Philpot points out how Henry Kissinger said that Obama has "the opportunity to create a new world order." That's pretty much it. (Perhaps it will become a regular Newshive feature.)
-- Hughes brings up Paul Rolly's column about Mark Shurtleff giving The Trib the silent treatment because of articles the AG didn't like. "I and Mark Shurtleff and any other official that might be sought after for an article are free to say 'no,'" he said. "It's not illegal, it's not unethical, and it's not wrong." (I agree. And I'm done talking to Hughes. That'll get him. By way of an update, I think we have things patched up with Shurtleff. We'll see if it lasts).
That's about it. I believe Stephenson is back from Alabama and back on the air next week.

Robert, I agree. I should probably pick a team and stick with it. Having gone to both schools this is difficult. I always route for both, that is except when the U plays the Y. Like Rep. Hughes, at that time I am a Cougar.
There are exceptions however, like when the Utes are going after another perfect season. This year I cheered for the Utes.
My apologizes for being so wishy washy.
UTAH UTES ARE #1!
That's sure a lot of bellyaching from Greggy - the poker playing punching bag who never graduated from college.
A sincere thanks to you Robert for listening so we don't have to.
I am a Utah Man, and that is why I root for the Y. The better the Y does when they aren't playing the U, the better the U's strength of schedule.
Same goes for rooting for the rest of the MWC and Utah State.
