Defending the defenseless
Coach Bill Evans seemed to sense right away what kind of trouble his Southern Utah Thunderbirds might have just caused for colleague Ray Giacoletti with their 76-73 victory over the Utes on opening night.
So, mere minutes into his postgame remarks to reporters, he began offering what sounded like a defense of the coach he had just beaten.
“Coach Giacoletti is a tremendous guy, and does a tremendous job with his team,” Evans said. “He’s got a bunch of young guys. Stephen Weigh is going to be an outstanding kid. Trust me on this one. Johnnie Bryant is only a junior and Luke is young. He’s got a young team, I think he’s done a good job of recruiting, and I think his kids played hard.”
Of course, the Utes aren’t seeing things quite so rosy at the moment. They have a lot of work to do before their next game at Santa Clara next weekend, primarily on defense. The Thunderbirds shot 65 percent against them, and not because they managed a bunch of layups. Many of their shots were at least mid-range jumpers, often without a defender even close to the shooter.
“Once we got over the hump a couple of times, we couldn’t get stops," Giacoletti said. "Couldn’t be disciplined in doing things a certain way” to stop the Thunderbirds. Center Luke Nevill said the Utes lacked intensity. "We need to work on that, and get more pressure," he said.

Coach Giacoletti need to accept responsibility for lossing this game. Here are some of his mistakes:
1, Why would Coach G substituted 5 unproven players at once... I'd let the point gaurd rest 1st, and put him back in whenever there are more than 2 rookies in the game.
2, Where is Kim during the most of the 1st half, why wasn't he in the game earlier.
3, In the second 1/2, why didn't Coach G learn from his substitution mistake? He put in 4 rookies and lost the lead again.
4, Why would Coach G let Kim fouled out? Someone else could have been there to do the fouling... especially when Kim has the height and ability to catch and shoot 3 pointers.
5, Will Coach G tell Ricky that he is on a team of 5... Ricky has in 2 games went 1 on 5. If Majerus was here, that kid will never play again!
5, If Luke is tried or sick, don't play him as much, he is just exhausted... he is pulling on his pants legs in the middle of the 2nd half when he is at the foul line... which is why he missed so many of his freethrows and couldn't get off the ground to get rebound.
Coach G is an adequate coach, he talks about reducing player mistakes such as turnovers, making foul shots etc... I think it is equally important to avoid Coaching mistake during the game.
Coach Majerus has a plan for every situtation that he can think of and he'd write it down!! so he won't forget during stressful game situtations.
Frank Layden has said that Coach G is in way over his head... One should have known when he said he wanted to hire people that he has relation with (friends); I would have hired the best assistants.
