'Event Cascades' Part of What's Troubling Utes
Coach Jim Boylen talked a lot early in the season about needing some leaders to emerge on his team, but we haven't heard him such much about that lately.
How does he feel the Utes have performed, on that count?
"We have done a better job of taking ownership of our mistakes," he said. "We've done a better job of admitting that we were wrong. What we have not done a better job of is recovering from the mistake."
"We have 'event cascades,'" he said. "One mistake, then another mistake and another mistake. OK? And that is part of handling that first mistake. Do you dwell on it? Do you lose your confidence on it? That is part of the process. Everything's going good, we're good. Things go bad ..."
Boylen noted that the Utes have had "some games" in which they fought back from adversity to win, such as at Air Force, but also that they far more often allow mistakes to compound one another, the way they did at TCU the other night.
"One missed defensive assignment, then we miss a one-and-one, then we foul in the penalty -- and give them two free throws -- 75 feet from the basket," he said. "That's what happened" in the 67-61 loss to the Horned Frogs.
"We have to learn how to stop those, and learn how to handle those," he said. "And again, that's the maturity part of it and the toughness part of it."

do away with a couple of those mistakes in even half of the close losses and this team is a happy 20-6 or 19-7 instead of a depressed 15-11. Amazing how just a few bad plays can sour a season.
I hope Boylen is talking about only the players and not himself when he says "WE need to learn how to handle those(mistakes)", because if HE doesn't already know how to handle them, then Chris Hill DID make a horrible hire. First year coach or not, this team is full of players that got plenty of experience last year and while the record is better, they haven't shown much improvement on the floor if any at all.
Yeah Utethunder, cuz thats what I want. A coach who points fingers at his players when they make mistakes. I am glad he is saying WE because that means he is in it with his team. He has their back. Last thing we need is a coach who throws his players under the bus when things are bad. Honest to crap, I dont understand the impatience of our fan base. Give the dude SOME FREAKING TIME...We act as if we are this high and mighty fan base but then look at the Huntsman Center...Its pathetic...We have a bunch of hypocritacal zoobs.
You can't judge a coach by his first year on the job. You have to wait until he has his own players. If Boylen's OWN players are 15-11, 6-7 in two years from now, THEN the fans can start making evaluations. Right now it's Jim Boylen coaching Ray Giacoletti's team.
He's a first year coach, but he's got a ton of potential. Give the guy some time. Rick Majerus was .500 his first season with Keith Van Horn. Dean Smith was 8-9 his first year and it took him 21 years to win his first national championship. I'm not putting Boylen in the all-time-great category, but the instant gratification thing sucks. Cut the guy some slack, he's bustin' his you-know-whats for this program.
All I meant was that if he said WE in the sense that he doesn't know how to fix things, then the program is not in very good hands. If he does know, then yeah, it is good that he is including himself with the team. To majerussweater: If we have to wait until he gets his own players to see improvement, doesn't that just mean coaching has nothing to do with being good and it's all about recruiting better players than the teams you are playing? Good coaches get more out of their players than bad coaches. So far, Boylen does not seem to be getting much out of the same group of guys Giac couldn't get anything out of.
I was trying to cut Coach Boylen some slack, but after watching the TCU game the other night, I don't think he's the guy. Right now he is all talk, I'm tired of hearing the same speech after every game, we're learning, we're getting tougher, we need to play with more grit. Luke has regressed under Boylen, this kid doesn't even recognize when to shoot over smaller defenders or post up bigger ones. All Coach Boylen had to do this year was keep it simple, play to each players strength, but no he comes with his 135 option play book of plays Bob Cousy ran in 1950. When you have a 7'1' center you park his butt in the middle of the paint, in a zone with his arms up and make the other team adjust, thats all. TCU's smaller players exposed Luke doesn't play weakside defense when he has to leave his man. Then whats this crap with the Brown kid, one bad play he's on the bench for the rest of the night, Kepkay, Drca, bad pass, turnovers, get ripped, they play through mistake after mistake and still on the floor? That was the most embarrassing display of basketball I have ever seen the other night, when he called for a press with 46 seconds left I knew he was lost, TCU was down a 12-13 pt scorer in Salter and you don't come out press at the start of the game? You name one player in Coach Boylen's past who can come out and say he made a difference in their development? Who Eric Dampier, Yao Ming, Kelvin Cato? I am so sick and tired of people and their "he's playing with Giac's players", "wait till he gets his guys in". You can't name 2 players on any team in the MWC that are better than 2 players on Utah right now, not one team. Hell, you take Nevill, Brown, Borha, Bryant, Tillie, Green and put them on UNLV, BYU or San Diego State and all those teams would be in first place right now.
ranwithaute-You are embarrassing. How does Roy WIlliams get more than a year to rebuild UNC and Ben Howland get more than a year to rebuild UCLA but Jim Boylen gets a half of a freaking season?!?!? You probably were one of the Ute fans who whined when Urban Meyer left Utah right? Well we fans get as much loyalty as we deserve. "We got your back coach" "We love you" "You're our guy" "Dont leave us" "Stick with our program coach" "We appreciate all you do...as long as you win..If you dont win IMMEDIATELY we are going to run you out so fast you wont know what happened" I truly am embarrassed for our fan base. We are the biggest joke in the conference. We demand excellence right from the start but dont ever show up at the stadium to support the teams. What a freaking joke. Oh and to answet your ricidulous question ranwithaute BYU has Plaisted, Cummard and Tavernari ALL better than our anyone on our team
UNM-Giddens and Prentiss better than our guys
UNLV-Terry and Wink Adams better than anyone on our team.
Those are the leaders and thats why their better.
We are MUCH BETTER defensively. Thats how you judge a coach who has NO TALENT...Look at the defense. Seriosuly, you and "bigutefan" are truly, truly an embarrassment.
Oh my god, you dare mention Coach Boylen with Ben Howland and Roy Williams of all people, Ute Family?
Lets see the last time UCLA had to rebuild was the year Walt Hazzard or Larry Farmer were coaching, two first time coaches overwhelmed by the pressure of running a big time program.
When you're UCLA or North Carolina, you don't have to rebuild, you just reload.
None of those players are better than any player we have right now, they are allowed by their respective coaches to do what they do best. I'll take Johnny Bryant over Wink Adams in a heart beat, Lon Kruger would be starting Bryant right now if he had him.
Cummard just out hustles eveyone on the floor. If Carlon Brown had signed with UNLV he would be freshman of year in the MWC playing at the point, Terry would have been a 3. Plaisted? Okay roll right, brick, roll left brick, that stiff can't even play.
Why am I wasting my time defending my opinon when you probably still blame Ray Giacoletti for this season too or are you one of the many who clap at the end of the game and say "last year we would of lost this game by 20"
Were you at the TCU game? The girls team was more exciting than what was displayed the other night.
I agree we are little better defensively, we're not losing games based on that, it's fundamentals, reboundng, free throws and turnovers.
You wait....pretty soon the after the game microphone act and the kids need to play with more grit speech is going to grow tired for you too.
Dude, you are tiresome. First, I disagree with your assesment of those players.
Second, UCLA and UNC dont reebuild huh? They just reload? Well if you knew anything you would realize that Ben Howland went 11-17 in his 1st year at UCLA. 11-17. Nit much of an improvement from winning 10 games the year before. And Roy Williams at UNC? Well he won 19 games. The year before UNC won 19 games. So not much improvement there huh?
Its a good thing they did not fire those coaches after their 1st year huh? See thats why you're not an AD. You would be the worst AD in the history of mankind.
We have a coach who has improved these guys and WANTS to be here. He is reaching out to the fans and community. So lay off him for a couple years.
Can't you all just get along? The Utes are...not good.
Dear Utethunder and Ranwithaute,
Please ignore the two horrible blog posters on this site, named "utefamily, and "majerussweater." They act like big BULLIES and if you don't write in fairy tale language that everything is wonderful on the hill then they rip people apart and call them names and pronounce that they can't be Ute fans. Personally I think those two "idiots" act like BYU fans living in Fairy Tale land, that all is well, and don't say anything mean. Things continue to get worse, thanks for posting a real opinion. Just in case you didn't know it "utefamily" and "majerussweater," blogs are for ALL people to express their opinions, both good and bad. NOT TO BULLY PEOPLE! FYI, your not in charge of this blog, nor are you in charge of ute fans. Do us all a favor and cheer for somebody else yourself. If you had half a clue you would notice numerous comments from sportscasters, sportswriters, and on other UTE sites that MANY fans are not jumping on the Boylen bandwagon. GO UTES!
Hey bigutefan: Did you jump on the coach Giac bandwagon after his first season? Who do you think deserves the credit for that Sweet 16 run? Andrew Bogut, Justin Hawkins and Marc Jackson or Ray Giacoletti? I'm sure you were thrilled with Majerus after he went .500 his first season, weren't you? I'm just asking you to look at the big picture, and to give coach Boylen a chance. You need more than 8 players to compete. You need talent to win, any coach will tell you that. The most underrated aspect of coaching is recruiting. That's why I'm saying we need to wait and see the kind of talent Boylen can accumulate. Good players make good teams, not good coaches. Where would Phil Jackson be without Jordan, Pippen, Kobe and Shaq? Where would Jerry Sloan be without Malone, Stockton, Boozer and Williams? Where would Rick Majerus be without Van Horn, Miller, Jensen and Doleac? In Majerus' last years as coach, the recruiting dropped off and so did the wins. He was still running the same offensive and defensive sets. He just didn't have the players. Seriously, name one coach who wins without talent....
