Battle at DT gets another participant
The battle for the defensive tackle positions may have just gotten a little more interesting. Sophomore Isley Filiaga, who has missed much of spring practice with a foot injury, participated in some drills Thursday. He was still limping around, but I get the sense he needs to get on the field to show what he can do even if he isn't 100 percent.

Kenape Eliapo, Lei Talamaivao and Aaron Tonga all have taken advantage of Filiaga's absence by getting a bunch of reps. Filiaga, who transferred from BYU and is a return missionary is a bit of an unknown factor. It will be interesting to see if he can get some approval from the coaches in these last few practices.

Today's scrimmage will be from 3 to 5 p.m. at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Utes went through a short practice Thursday and are hoping to get in about 85 snaps at the scrimmage.

Not surprisingly, coach Kyle Whittingham said he needs to see some improvement in the offense. The defense has certainly gotten the better of the offense so far in the spring.

No new injuries to report, which is always good. Receiver Bradon Godfrey still has a hamstring strain so he may not do much today.

Utah's gymnastics team was scheduled to fly out of Salt Lake City to Minneapolis Thursday, but after waiting at the airport for more than four hours their plans were canceled because of a winter storm that is pounding Minneapolis. The Utes couldn't find flights to get their 20-member traveling to Minneapolis because most airlines are overbooked after American Airlines canceled all of its flights out of Salt Lake City for maintenance issues.

The Utes are scheduled to leave this morning and arrive in Minneapolis via Billings, Mont. However, they won't make it in time to join the five other teams during today's practice session.

Lya,

Great stuff as always. Do you think that the fact the defense has had the upperhand during spring is a good sign for the team because of all of the talent they lost at Linebacker and D-line or is it a bad sign because the offense can't take advantage of the inexperienced defense? I think it is the former because you would expect the offense, with as much talent as they have returning, to get itself going by the time the season starts. But you are the one watching practice, so please give us your thoughts.
