Football: Johnson says shoulder is 'great'
Ute quarterback Brian Johnson would like to pass on a message to Ute fans and anyone else who has followed the long drama of his slow-healing shoulder: "It's great," he said Thursday.

Johnson was hanging out at the Smith Center Thursday watching teammates Darrell Mack and Robert Johnson model the new uniforms.

He'll be getting his own publicity time starting Monday when the conference meetings begin in Las Vegas. Kicker Louie Sakoda will be joining him there.

Johnson just returned from the Manning Passing Academy in Louisiana where he worked out with many other college quarterbacks who were working the camp. He also got to hang out with the Mannings.

"It was a lot of fun," he said.

Ute fans will care to know most that his shoulder is doing well and he hopes to end soon any concerns it won't handle the rigors of the season.

"There were times in the spring when I was thinking, 'Come on, come on get better.' And it wasn't," he said. "I've been working hard this summer and it feels great."

A couple other notes I gathered Thursday. Freddie Brown has continued the good play he started in spring. I also heard Paul Kruger has been pushing the receivers when it comes to showing speed on the team's runs. Is that a good sign for Kruger or a bad sign for the Utes' receivers?!

Johnson said the summer workouts have been hard.

"I'm getting better, my shoulder is strong and getting better. The defense is good, offense is good. We all feel we want a Jan. 1 bowl game, that's why summer workouts are harder than normal."
