The Mountain West Conference has landed the fifth bowl berth it has been wanting.
The MWC and Western Athletic Conference announced today the two conferences have agreed to meet in the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho starting with the 2009 season.
MWC commissioner Craig Thompson said during the football media days in July he wanted to arrange an agreement with the bowl to give the league five bowl possibilities because bowl-eligible teams have been left out of the bowl season in the past.
"We are pleased to secure a fifth guaranteed slot for our member institutions in this established and respected game," he said Thursday.
The MWC will send its fifth-place finisher to the Humanitarian Bowl in 2009 against a WAC opponent.
The deal with the Humanitarian Bowl means the WAC and MWC should meet twice in the post-season since the leagues have an agreement to play in the New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque as well.
The possibility of aligning with the Humanitarian Bowl became available in the spring for the MWC when the ACC announced it was no longer going to partner with the bowl.
Most bowl agreements will be re-set for the 2010-11 bowl season but it's anticipated the WAC and MWC will remain with the Humanitarian Bowl.
"Over the past several years the WAC and Mountain West have demonstrated a very high level of national success on the football field, both regular season and in the bowl season," WAC commissioner Karl Benson said. "We look forward to carrying that success and rivalry over into the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl."
The MWC's other bowl agreements are with the Las Vegas Bowl, the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego and the Armed Forces Bowl in Ft. Worth.
The WAC has an agreement with the Hawaii Bowl in addition to the Humanitarian and New Mexico Bowls.
What quality opponent the MWC's fifth-place team will face is uncertain since the WAC generally places its teams closer to their geographical locations. Hawaii and Boise State often play in their bowls if they aren't in the BCS mix.
The WAC has been involved with the Humanitarian Bowl for the last eight seasons.

Long overdue to match the two conferences up. My only complaint - match up the two conf champs (unless they are BCS Bowling). Send our 2nd team to Vegas.
As a Ute fan, if we are ever in the Humanitarian Bowl you will know we have officially hit rock bottom!
I'd rather see a matchup with a BCS conference outside the Pac 10. However, put this game in San Diego with the top two available teams from the MWC and WAC, a better date than that of the LV Bowl, and you'd probably have a great one.
