The Utah Utes are officially in Bowl Championship Series contention and the BYU Cougars are officially out.
On Tuesday the BCS retained 22 teams for BCS consideration and released the others. Among those retained were Utah, TCU and Boise State.
The Cougars, ranked No. 18, were released which clears the way for the Las Vegas Bowl to select the Cougars.
The Las Vegas Bowl has the first pick of MWC teams and is expected to take the Cougars over TCU for its Dec. 20 game.
Utah is ranked No. 6 in the standings, Boise State is No. 9 and TCU is No. 14.
The Utes are most likely headed for the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 5 or the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2.
Penn State, which as the Big Ten champion has earned a spot in the Rose Bowl, is the only team that knows its BCS fate.
The BCS retained all the teams in the BCS conference title races since the champion gets an automatic berth. In the ACC those teams are Boston College, FSU, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. In the Big East they are Cincinnati and West Virginia. Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech can all still win the Big 12 and were retained. Pac-10 teams retained were Oregon State and USC and SEC teams retained were Alabama and Florida.
Others who were out of conference races but retained were Ball State, Georgia, Ohio State and Oklahoma State.
The BCS will make its final selections on Dec. 7.
