Utah's Andersen, Sakoda and Johnson up for awards
Utah defensive coordinator Gary Andersen was named one of five finalists for the Broyles award Monday, given to the top college football assistant. The other finalists were Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong, TCU defensive coordinator Dick Bumpas, Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson and Ball State offensive coordinator Stan Parrish.
He was willing to discuss that honor more than his future. Andersen refused to comment Monday on the possibility that he could be Utah State's next coach. He credited his players for the success his squad had this season.
"Good players make good coaches and they did an outstanding job this year," he said of his defense.
Also on Monday, quarterback Brian Johnson is one of 10 finalists for the Manning Award, given to the college football's top quarterback by the Sugar Bowl.
Kicker Louie Sakoda is one of four finalists for the Wuerffel Trophy, which is awarded for community service, academics and athletics.
