Why Whittingham voted for his team and Brown didn't
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham was on a teleconference this morning. I've got a few highlights below and we'll have an article posted online in a bit.
Here is an explanation as to why Mack Brown didn't vote for his team, according to the Dallas Morning News. More on the AFCA rules if you care.

Whittingham said he voted his team fifth in the regular season final poll then first in the one following the bowl because of the quality of the opponent the Utes played and they "decisively won the game."
He mentioned the long-term effects of winning the goal are going to be extremely valuable, especially in recruiting.
As far as being bitter about being No. 2 and not No. 1, he said he wasn't bitter, but did mention the only way to really settle who is No. 1 is with a playoff system.

Asked about the schedule and whether the Utes should schedule more difficult teams and Whittingham said he thought the Utes had the "right mix" of strong teams to play, but also a schedule they could handle.

ESPN says one of the games that hurt Utah's strength of schedule the most was Michigan, certainly not the game we thought might hurt the Utes possibly as much as it did.

Whittingham, by the way, gets a $50,000 bonus for his team being ranked in the final AP or coaches Top 25 poll, his contract doesn't stipulate a difference between finishing No. 2 or No. 25. Altogether, he earned $320,000 in bonuses this year and no doubt the success of the season played into his 5-year, $1.2 million new contract, talk about incentives!

Too bad the Dallas papers won't report the real reason Brown didn't vote his team #1. His team places in a BCS conference, and they're not about to let one of their own bust ranks. Given that he and Kyle would have been the only two, you know the powers that be would have called him out.

Let's see...he's Mack Brown of the Texas Longhorns, that team that beat USC for the NC a few years ago...who has a 10 or 11 win season for a good number of years, and he's afraid to vote his team #1 for fear of being called out by his conference???
Brrrahhahahahhahahahahaha!!

Hooray for Kyle!!! Sometimes it's sweet not being BCS and laughing at them all the way to the Sugar Bowl bank!!
