"It was just an honor as a high school coach to have an interview," Wong said.
Wong, who has been at Timpview for the last 11 years, seven years as an assistant and four as the head coach, said he was interested in moving up to the college ranks because coaching at the collegiate level has been a lifelong dream.
A lineman at BYU from 1981-1984, Wong was previously a graduate assistant at Utah for two seasons and interviewed three years ago at BYU when there was an opening as an offensive line coach.
Wong said the time is good for him now to move to the college ranks because his family is in a good situation.
"I made some sacrifices before to make sure my family was stable," he said. "Now it's time for me to live my dream if it works out."
Wong said he believes he can help Utah with its recruiting, in Hawaii where he grew up and in Utah. Timpview has been a great feeder school for the BYU program with eight players from the high school on the 2008 roster and 14 from Utah County. The Utes had just six from the county (although Ute fans would probably argue Paul Kruger was worth more than three "normal" players.)
Wong believes he can help Utah tap into the area if he is hired.
"I have good people skills, I'm honest with people and I'm trustworthy," he said. "I think I could give Utah an edge in-state."
Course, the question most Ute fans want to know is which way Timpview star Xavier Su'a-Filo is leaning. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound offensive guard is considering the Utes along with LSU, BYU, UCLA and USC.
Wong isn't sure if he has narrowed that list with signing day just a day away. He said he hasn't talked to him much, but indicated there is a chance Filo might wait to see if Wong gets the job at Utah. The Utes are expected to make a decision on the OL position by the end of the week.
"If that happens, I would recruit him as hard as anyone," he said. "But he is a big boy and he needs to make his own decision and decide what is best for him and not have me be a factor. He needs to go to what school feels right for him."
According to a news release by ESPN, Su'a-Filo is supposed to make his decision live on ESPNU Wednesday. The channel is running nine hours of recruiting analysis and announcements from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
NBC took a look at Utah's recruiting philosophy.
