Corbin Louks' experiment with a new position started Saturday, as he spent the first half of Saturday's practice as a quarterback and the second half as a safety.
By all accounts he did well and he said he enjoyed the view from the defensive side.
"I had a good time," he said. "The guys welcomed me in open arms, teaching me what to do so I had a good time."
Louks sat in on safety meetings Friday evening and Saturday morning. If he makes the move to defense, he and the coaches would prefer to redshirt him this season.
"His speed, his athleticism, his competitiveness, he is a natural," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said.
Safety Robert Johnson, who spent a lot of time with Louks giving him tips, liked having the junior on his side of the ball.
"He looked good back there," he said. "I can say now we have one of the fastest players on the team at safety so he looked good for the first day."
Whittingham said moving Louks was still just an experiment. But the last two experimental moves the Utes made with QBs were moving Chad Manis to linebacker and DeVonte Christopher to wide receiver. I'm going to believe this one will stick.
I'll have more on Louks' day in the print edition tomorrow.
As for Saturday's practice, Whittingham called it the best the Utes have had in camp.
"We were getting after it, flying around, great focus and great concentration," he said. "I would say without a doubt this was our best to this point in time."
The Utes didn't have any serious injuries, although the pit was busy with sore players including linebacker Stevenson Sylvester, running back Eddie Wide and kicker Ben Vroman.
All are expected back for Monday's sessions.
