Have Utes found a Wynn-er?

October 31st, 2009

Jordan Wynn is no longer the guy on the sidelines wondering if he is ever going to play. It looks like we have a quarterback battle opening up again after the freshman came in and helped the Utes beat Wyoming 22-10 Saturday.

Actually, maybe we don't. Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said following the win that he isn't interested in a two-quarterback system and will decide by Monday who will start against New Mexico. He also mentioned he may not announce publicly who that guy is.

"I don't want to have a two quarterback system," he said. "Never say never. But I'm not a fan of that. I prefer one guy to be the guy. That is my hope we go in that direction."

Feelings here are that Terrance Cain has had his chances. His stats are good, but Whittingham said he felt the need to make a change because drives weren't finishing in points. Wynn had his issues with that too, but now that his redshirt year is gone I hope they give him as fair of a chance to guide the Utes as they did Cain.

"It's too early to determine," Whittingham said of the starter. "We'll look at the film and analyze the film and break down both guys and name a starter on Monday. I'm very pleased with what he did," he said of Wynn.

As for his first experience at the collegiate level, Wynn was all smiles but wisely credited the defense. Make no mistake, the Utes still have issues on offense, but with Wynn it seems as if the Utes have some fresh possibilities ahead of them. With Cain, I think the general consensus was we'd all seen the limits of his abilities.

You can read all the game coverage here as well as more on Wynn and the other switch, moving offensive coordinator Dave Schramm down to the field and sending Aaron Roderick upstairs to make the calls.

Couple of other thoughts on the game. False starts helped kill two Utah drives in the second half. Offensive lineman Zane Beadles said Wyoming made some calls that helped draw the Utes offsides. "That is something we have to clean up."

Beadles also said he took the other offensive linemen aside before the second half started. "I told them we had a young guy coming in and we had to keep guys off him and build his confidence," he said. "We were able to do that in the second half."

Funny moment in the post-game press conference when Whittingham mentioned the Utes were "7-2." He didn't notice his mistake until it was pointed out to him. "I apologize for that," he said.

Coaches switch spots

October 31st, 2009

Utah has announced that Aaron Roderick, the wide receivers coach who was the co-offensive coordinator for a brief time before going to Washington, then returning to the Utes, is in the booth for today's game while offensive coordinator Dave Schramm is on the field.

Thoughts before the game

October 31st, 2009

Greetings from the press box, absolutely gorgeous day for a football game. Folks must be enjoying it in their own ways because there are fewer people here than usual.

Said just about all there is to say on this game before it kicks off, so let's talk about the USC/Oregon game. An Oregon win should help the Utes' standing that much more. Course, it'll help Boise State's cause too.

Do many Utah fans care about Boise State's cause anymore or is the general thinking the higher the Broncos are in the BCS standings the better the chances of another non-BCS team making it into the BCS too?

Suppose Utah finishes with just the one loss to Oregon, granted that means the Utes have to figure out how to beat TCU and BYU, but nothing seems to be out of the realm of possibility with this Utah program these days.

Such a scenario would make it very interesting for the BCS, particularly if the Ducks go on to win the Pac-10. Something to think about anyway before the Utes kick off.

Is Utah's offense a worry?

October 30th, 2009

There has been a lot of talk about the lack of production from Utah's offense in recent weeks, is it time to panic? Yes and no. Remember, the Utes were similar last year too with an offense that never really seemed to come alive until it absolutely had to do so. A lot of the credit for being able to produce when it had to was given to quarterback Brian Johnson, the strongest leader on the team.

So far, I haven't seen that kind of leadership charisma in Terrance Cain. That doesn't mean he doesn't have it, but he is a much quieter, harder to read quarterback than Johnson was in public. He might be a different kind of guy with his teammates and some of his offensive linemen say that he is.

Regardless, with some big games coming up the offense has to get going. So here is the question, do you bring in backup quarterback Jordan Wynn against the Cowboys if the Utes get control early?

He continues to get his share of snaps in practice and coach Kyle Whittingham hasn't ruled out playing him. However, to me he has to get some playing time against Wyoming and New Mexico if the Utes want to have him available as a realistic option at TCU. It would be extremely unfair for the Utes to get behind at TCU and then ask him to come in and save the day if he doesn't have any game experience.

Back to Cain, can he keep the Utes winning? So far the Utes have gone with some conservative play calling for him and they've survived. They should be able to do the same against Wyoming and New Mexico, but I doubt they can do it against TCU.

Spoke with offensive coordinator Dave Schramm about the offense and the inconsistencies are still eating at him.

"We have good weeks of practice but we have to carry it over to the field," he said. "That [Air Force] game was absolutely atrocious when you look at the stats. We had six first downs in regulation and that is awful, just two explosive plays and that isn't what this offense is based on."

He didn't mince words earlier this week saying Cain needs to do a better job finding receivers other than David Reed, let's see if he can do that Saturday and get the offense into a rhythm.

Clearing out the notebook with some random thoughts on Saturday's game.

Here is linebacker Stevenson Sylvester: "They play good football so they have our respect. They have more of a spread look to them than Air Force so it's more common for us. We just have to find their tendencies."

On the blackout: "Everybody is talking about it. We want to wear black as much as possible, this one time a year thing, I don't like it too much. It's going to be a good event and the crowd is going to go nuts."

Coach Kyle Whittingham on Cain and the advantage of having him with the Utes when spring ball started.

"It would have been very difficult for him to come in and start if he wasn't here in the spring. Terrance started to do some good things in spring and then fall camp it was evident he worked hard and kept progressing."

Whittingham on Cain's improvement: "So far it has been good," he said. "We did have some things last week not so good but he's a mentally tough kid and will get that corrected."

Utah forward out with stress fracture

October 29th, 2009

Utah forward Jay Watkins was one of the big crowd pleasers during the Utes' scrimmage Wednesday night, showing off his athleticism while going up for rebounds and dunks.

Unfortunately for the Utes, it will be several weeks before anyone sees that athleticism again.

Watkins is out 4-to-6 weeks with a stress fracture in his pelvis, the Utes announced Thursday.

The fracture was found after Watkins woke up with pain Thursday morning and was examined by a doctor.

"Jay has excelled on and off the court and we are very disappointed for him," Utah coach Jim Boylen said. "We hope he makes a speedy recovery and we will do everything we can to support him through the process."
